Vision 2030: Redesigning Education for the future, by Stephen Downes.

Stephen Downes is a well-known Canadian researcher and is considered one of the most prominent educational gurus in the fields of eLearning, technologies, Design and many more.

This is the synopsis for Downes presentation at the Asbar World Forum “Vision 2030” in Saudi Arabia. Stephen Downes outlines his vision on how Analytics and AI technologies will shape and redefine the act of learning and consequently the way Educational institutions must respond and adapt their methods of delivery and redefine teaching.

Downes outlines three dimensions or aspects that will have a direct influence on how education will be shaped:

  • Relevant
  • Engaging
  • Personal (Personalized vs Personal Learning model)

Each of these dimensions is composed of different variables playing a dynamic role in this new paradigm, i.e. the way to design our courses including mobile learning format.

These three dimensions also require strong support from three essential areas:

  • Learning Resources –Open – Personalized
  • Environments From LMS to Learning Platform with a myriad of learning tools and apps.
  • Assessments – Student Autonomy

Finally, he predicts that the transition represents an unquestionable challenge for the existing Educational System and Institutions as they move from a centralized model to a personal model of learning.  He concludes his presentation saying:

“In an increasingly dynamic and chaotic world, the need to adapt may be greater than the need to stay the same.”
