Volunteer Opportunities

The following are volunteer opportunities available to all students who want to get involved with the Shack. These would be projects that would be done independently and on your own time, but in return you would have your name posted on the website next to the project as well as have the ability to present about it during specific Shack events.

If you are interested in any of the projects below, send an e-mail to “theshack@ualberta.ca” and we will be in contact with you.

Independent Heated Bed

The original machine printer does not have a heated bed. It could be useful to create and independent heated bed that could be attached to the printer. Instead of running the bed through the printer as a whole the bed temperature could be controlled with an outside dial and power source.

Paste Extruder

This one is a bit of a tough one. The first goal is to simply test the past extruder using a gantry. We were given permission to test it using the left-behind printer from the Veino Lab. If the filament extruder proves to be successful, then there would be a follow up to install it permanently to a gantry.

Stool Sensors

Set up system that allows us to put stools out without them being stolen! RFID was a potential starting point!! Maybe Bluetooth??? Something! Help students get chairs!

Skills: Learn about sensor, electronics knowledge, design knowledge

Stool height alteration

Hate that all the stools are the same ultra high height? Me too. Use a pipe cutter and a few other tricks to make the stools the right height!

Skills: using hand tools, being everyone’s hero.

Filament Joiner

Instead of throwing out small ends of filament, create a hot end press that will join plastic filament ends. Talk to Danielle about ideas/process!

Skills to gain: Designing, potentially milling, learn how to heat metal with current

Create tutorial for Prusa printers

Similar to what Danielle created for the machina printers but for the Prusa. This should be a complete tutorial video with screen capture and visual cues. Should briefly cover options on Prusa, safety, how to fully run print, safe(for the printer) removal of objects.

Skills to gain: video recording knowledge, voice over experience, video editing

Set up Paste Printer

We currently have a lovely paste extruder patiently waiting for attention in The Shack. What does it need you ask? A printer to run it! There also happens to be a smaller printer that can be used to test attaching the extruder to a gantry.
Talk to Danielle for more information

Skills to gain: Get 3d printer building experience, general tool experience, electronics

Shack Magazine Highlighting/Organizing

Go through the Science Magazines and highlight the timely/relevant ones on a magazine stand of your creation!

Shack Information Manager

We could use some focus on organizing documents and information necessary to run The Shack. This would include collecting information from previous employees and creating a “dictionary” of important tasks and knowledge sharing.

Outreach Coordinator

The Shack is involved in tons of outreach events for kids and adults alike! Be the person who organizes the Shackers. This position would entail communicating with the outside groups hosting the events (such as Let’s Talk Science and Science FUNdamentals) and finding Shackers to be at the booths. This could also involve further developing any demos presented at the booths.

Self Leveling Bed

Create a prototype for a self-leveling bed for a 3d printer. This should include a sensor that detects the distance from the nozzle and adjusts screws below bed using motor system of some sort to level all to the same height.

Project Documentation Manager
  • Someone who oversees various projects produced using The Shack(full or partial)
  • This person would be in charge of following up with Shack users for photos and designs so that they can be added to the Shack Wiki and Project list. They will also keep an up to date record of people using The Shack equipment
Unwarpable Printer Bed

Create a prototype for a 3D printer bed that is made to be extremely flat and not warped by continued heating and cooling

Bypass Da Vinci Printer filament chip

The da Vinci (Leo) printer uses a chip system to detect rolls of filament. Online you can find ways to bypass this chip so it always reads full- or whatever it does- so that we do not have to use the unnecessary cartridges.

See Clayton or Danielle for more details.
